Clarice Cliff is one of the UK’s most important ceramicists, best known for her brightly colored, graphic geometric designs. Inspired by the Art Deco movement, the majority of her output was between 1927 – 1936, with a line called Bizarre Ware. Bizarre Ware was an immediate hit with the public, as it was design-forward and affordable.
As is the case with many Art Deco and Art Nouveau objects, the aesthetic can be traced back to art and design in Japan—and back again to the West—when Japanese artisans and designers imitated Western art and design. Today, you can still collect and see examples of Clarice Cliff’s work in museums, and even find some “Clarice Cliff-inspired” works from Japan.
In my paintings, I consider the movement of interpreted ideas onto various forms across national borders and throughout history, and their shape-shifting reanimation as they introduce new modes of being. The three-dimensional quality of my paintings address this notion of multiplicity, and a fluid approach to form, flatness, and image becomes necessary.
